About ToolSite

We built this tool so homeowners can walk into any flooring conversation knowing exactly what they should be paying — before anyone quotes them a number.

Why We Built This Calculator

Carpet installation pricing is notoriously opaque. Contractors quote different numbers for the same job. Retailers bundle padding and labor into a single price that's hard to compare. Homeowners end up guessing whether $4,200 for a 3-bedroom carpet project is fair or 40% too high.

The Carpet Cost Calculator gives you a transparent, itemized estimate before you talk to anyone. You see the carpet cost, padding cost, labor, and removal fees — each line calculated from national averages, not a retailer's margin goal.

We cross-referenced pricing data from the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI), HomeAdvisor national cost reports, and Angi contractor surveys to build a formula that reflects what real installers charge in most U.S. markets. Regional variations exist — prices in San Francisco run higher than rural Ohio — but the calculator gives you a reliable baseline to anchor your conversations.

Built for Homeowners

Every input and output in the calculator reflects decisions real homeowners make: which carpet grade, which padding, whether to remove the old carpet. The terminology matches what you'll hear from installers.

No Markups, No Ads Driving Results

This tool has no affiliation with any carpet manufacturer, retailer, or installation company. We don't receive commissions. The estimates reflect industry averages, not a sponsor's pricing.

Methodology You Can Verify

Our formula applies a 10% waste factor (per CRI guidelines), uses current labor rates from Angi national surveys, and breaks padding costs out separately so you can compare each component against your quotes.

Editorial Process

We review our pricing data annually against HomeAdvisor and Angi cost reports. When national averages shift by more than 5%, we update the calculator. The last updated date on every page shows when data was last verified.

How Our Data Works

Carpet material prices in our calculator range from $1.50/sq ft (builder-grade polyester) to $9.50/sq ft (luxury nylon or wool). These ranges reflect actual retail pricing from major national carpet suppliers, not MSRP. Padding costs from $0.30/sq ft (standard 6 lb rebond) to $0.75/sq ft (premium memory foam) — based on National Floor Covering Association (NFCA) pricing benchmarks.

Labor at $1.50/sq ft is the national median for residential carpet installation. This figure comes from Angi's annual "How Much Does Carpet Installation Cost?" report, which surveys licensed flooring contractors across all 50 states. Urban labor markets run $0.25–$0.50/sq ft higher; rural markets run lower.

The 10% waste factor is the minimum the Carpet and Rug Institute recommends for any residential installation. Rooms with multiple doorways, closets, or pattern-matched carpet typically need 12–15%. Our calculator uses the conservative 10% for simplicity — always confirm with your installer for rooms with unusual layouts.
